Sound Healing - The Benefits of Sound Baths

Have you ever been in one of those moods, where you are in a bout of sadness or the blues? Maybe you feel restless and can't seem to calm a busy mind.

In these moments, wouldn't it be nice to have a magic wand, maybe a mystical, radiant sound that cures it all?

Mediation or movement with sound can be a gateway to rewriting the emotional and mental state you might be in.

Sound Healing is the practice of listening to a sound practitioner bring frequencies and vibrations to one's mind and body with positive intention that results in physical and mental healing.

Sound meditation or healing generally consists of at least one Sound practitioner who can have a variety of instruments that provide relaxing, harmonic, and cleansing sounds for one's mind and body. There is a broad stroke of what these sounds might be and no "right" or "wrong" way to practice sound healing because the emphasis lies on the intention of the Sound healer and the student.

Instruments vary from singing bowls, crystal or Tibetan, flutes, Hand Pans, Rain sticks or drums, Gongs, and more.

Sound Healing is a way to:

  • Practice Listening in All Forms. Sound Healing involves all forms of listening. Outer listening: observing the silence or sounds around you. Inner Listening: the voice inside your head - the inner narrative. And Deep Listening: a practice of emptying your mind and being open to receive new information that leads to healing. A listening practice allows you to become present in the moment and more mindful or aware of everything inside and outside of you. Possibly our favorite benefit, Mindfulness, can unlock many paths for oneself.

  • Cleanse and Unlock your Chakras. Specific Singing Bowls are tuned to match the frequency of your Chakras. Chakras are energy centers through your body. You have seven main chakras and hundreds of subtle body chakras. Air and energy travel through these centers. When a chakra is blocked, illness or pain emerges as a direct result. Sound healing with specific chakra tuned instruments is said to bring the right vibrations to those centers of our bodies, acting as a massage to unblock that area, resulting in cleansing, releasing, healing, and regulation of those areas.

  • Recalibrate your Mind, Body, and Spirit. One of my favorite illustrations of sound healing is, "You don't need to see something for it to affect your consciousness." We have all heard a song that made us feel something no movie, book, or touch has ever made us feel. The same is true for a Sound Healing practice. Deep vibrations, ethereal and radiant sounds, traverse into our bodies with ease. The vibrations restore equilibrium in ourselves. Imagine a car going in for a tune-up. Maintenance is required to ensure it continues to drive well. We are complex cars that need complex maintenance to continue to drive.

"The best gift you can give yourself is a moment of deep relaxation for your mind and body." Something I often say in my Sound and Restore classes.

If you are curious about sound healing, I encourage you to give it a try. Set a positive intention or mantra for yourself. Allow your mind to flutter seamlessly from a state of outer listening into deep listening. Tune in with your body and take nice... long... breaths...

AIMwell Yoga only offers private sound baths and the occasional pop-up sound savasana in our Sunday Morning Community Class! To book a private Sound bath for two or a Private small group for up to 10 people, please visit our scheduling site at momoyoga.com!

We live in a busy and noisy world; that can overstimulate our minds stymying our ability to tune in. Let a sound healing practice bring you to a state of equilibrium and wellness.
